The Benefits of 3D Mammograms
When it comes to breast cancer screening, there is much discussion about dense breasts and what women need to know to take control of their health. Shedding light on this topic, a new paper presented today at the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) annual meeting found that 3D mammography significantly improves cancer detection in women with dense breasts. Since it is more difficult to detect breast cancer in women with dense breast tissue on a traditional mammogram, this finding is particularly important.
The study found:
- 3D mammography found 80 percent of cancer cases in women with dense breasts, compared to only 59 percent traditional mammography
- Across all breast densities, 82 percent were detected with 3D mammography, a significant improvement over the 63 percent detected on a traditional mammogram
- Overall relative increase in the invasive cancer detection rate of about 40% using 3D
