New Breast Cancer Surgery Techniques

Oncoplastic surgery is a relatively new practice of breast cancer surgery, combining oncology principles with plastic surgery techniques. Based on the stage of their cancer, women with breast cancer usually must choose between a mastectomy (removal of the entire breast) and lumpectomy (removal of just the tumor from the breast). With mastectomy, a woman can have reconstructive breast surgery. With the breast conserving lumpectomy, a woman is often left with an unsightly scar and depressed breast cavity.

FDA Approves New Genetic Test For Breast Cancer Patients

FDA has approved a test that helps in assessing the risk of tumor recurrence and long-term survival for patients with relatively high-risk breast cancer. The TOP2A FISH pharmDx is the first approved device to test for the TOP2A (topoisomerase 2 alpha) gene in cancer patients.

The TOP2A gene plays a role in DNA replication. The TOP2A FISH pharmDx test uses fluorescently labeled DNA probes to detect or confirm gene or chromosome abnormalities, a technology known as fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH).

Bevacizumab Improves Survival For Patients With Advanced Breast Cancer

Inhibiting the growth of blood vessels that supply tumors slows the progression of metastatic breast cancer according to results of a large clinical trial of Avastin, an anti-angiogenic therapy. The study, published in the December 27th issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, found that Avastin in combination with chemotherapy significantly prolongs progression-free survival for women with breast cancer compared to chemotherapy alone.

Reconstruction surgery rarely discussed with breast cancer patients

To be educated consumers of healthcare and ensure maximal breast cancer treatment decision quality the patients should be informed of all breast cancer treatment options. Most general surgeons do not discuss reconstruction with patients before surgical breast cancer treatment.
