Flu Vaccine Becomes Weak
Flu season is on its peak, doctors urge everyone to get vaccinated, but this year's virus seems to be smartened. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is worried with vaccine efficiency decreased compared to the previous years.
Flu vaccine was proved to kill from 70 to 90% of virus bags, but according to CDC's next week's announcement, vaccine efficiency was decreased to 50%. Currently, researches are already reporting only 40% efficiency. This week 44 US states reported widespread flu cases, compared to past week's 31 states.
This means that flu virus is getting smarter and new vaccine development is needed. Studying each year's seasonal statistics, researchers are predicting coming season. Among past 19 years 16 of them were successfully predicted and treated. This year's flu season caused 10 pediatric deaths. The number is almost the same as past year's pediatric deaths. However, this year is comparably bad than previous ones.
Scientists differ three common types of flu: two type A viruses (H3N2 and H1N1) and one type B virus. H3N2 is being treated by antiviral drugs such as Tamiflu, but this year's H1N1 virus appeared to be 4.6% resistant to antivirals. H1N1 has been mutating in 18 countries worldwide during this season. Type B virus also went out of drug control this season.
However, it's soon to announce this year's flu season the worst, because the first weeks of February are considered as season's peak. Flu kills from 250000 to 500000 annually worldwide, this is why it is extremely important to examine this year's statistics and make predictions for the coming year, develop smarter vaccine..
