Manchester celebrates success of flu campaign for older people

Manchester NHS is celebrating the success of its winter campaign to ensure that at least 70% of people aged over 65 received their flu jabs - the latest figures reveal that the city more than met the government target, with a 73% uptake in Manchester. Some of the highest performing GP practices in Manchester achieved more than 80% immunisation of their older patient groups - these include Ladybarn Practice in Fallowfield, Oswald Medical Practice in Chorlton, The Family Surgery in Clayton and Dam Head in Blackley

To encourage people to go along to their GP for their jab last autumn, the Primary Care Trust ran a 'prize draw' amongst the 60,000 older people eligible for the jab. Reminder postcards were sent to everyone eligible, who then simply handed the postcard in with their name and address to enter the draw once they had received the flu jab. The photograph below shows the delighted winner, Mrs Agnes Hynes of Withington, who received a basket of fruit and vouchers to treat herself at Marks and Spencer. Mrs Hynes, who is a patient of the Bodey Medical Practice in Fallowfield, which also achieved above the 70% target, says: "It's just brilliant - I have never won anything before."
