Helping School Districts Plan for Potential Pandemic Flu
The New Mexico Department of Health and New Mexico Public Education Department recently distributed educational information and resources to all public and charter schools, and education and health organizations to help them prepare for the potential of a pandemic flu.
The departments developed, "Preparing for Pandemic Flu in New Mexico Schools: Information for Educators and Community Members," a 35-page resource document to help schools promote healthy environments and craft their own preparedness plans, as well as help families stay healthy. Each section of the document gives key resources and information on what schools and families need to know and what they can do.
"This is about keeping New Mexicans safe from any public health threat," said Health Secretary Michelle Lujan Grisham. "We hope families and schools will use this information to help them stay healthy and get prepared to deal with any emergency."
The guide covers information about the risk of pandemic flu in schools, school emergency plans, family emergency plans and supplies, district wellness policies, health promotion and infection control policies, school closure and operation during an outbreak, and home care and protecting your family.
