What do the Results of a Scientific Study on Meratrim Weight Loss Supplement Really Say?

On a recent episode of The Dr. Oz Show, Dr. Oz reports that part of his latest fat loss program includes taking the fat busting weight loss supplement Meratrim. Dr. Oz mentions that his recommendation of this supplement is based on a scientific study published in the journal Obesity. Unfortunately, however, access to a copy of the study requires either an expensive subscription or purchase of the article making it unavailable for most Dr. Oz fans and those curious about what the results of a scientific study on Meratrim weight loss supplement really say.

The good news, however, is that World Biomedical Frontiers―an organization that focuses on cutting-edge biomedical research from around the globe, provides a description of the original paper telling readers how the study was performed and the results and conclusions reached by the paper’s authors.

The following is a summary of the report from World Biomedical Frontiers and what the authors of the original study had to say about the Meratrim weight loss supplement.

According to the authors of the study, how much body fat we carry is based on the chemical reactions of lipolysis (fat breakdown) when we expend more energy and thereby burn more calories than we consume; and, on adipogenesis (fat buildup) that results from excess production of fat tissue as well as the deposition of increased amounts of lipid droplets per cell.

In other words, not only do we gain fat from increased calorie consumption and decreased exercise, but at a deeper cellular level how much that is actually gained is dependent on how our individual and unique body normally produces and metabolizes fat as well.

Where diet and exercise fail to help many obese individuals lose weight and maintain permanent fat loss, other solutions are sought. One theory of combatting the accumulation of fat is to find a way to block the buildup and depositing of fat in the body

Recently, there has been growing interest in the use of two herbal supplements that together appear to prevent the accumulation of fat―Sphaeranthus indicus flower heads and Garcinia mangostana fruit rind. Currently, the two herbal supplements are available as a proprietary blend known as Meratrim®. Meratrim® is reportedly believed to exert its weight loss effects by interfering with the normal biochemical pathways involved in both fat buildup and fat breakdown.

To put Meratrim® to the test, the authors of the study that was published in the journal Obesity, performed a randomized double-blind study using 60 participants who were overweight and/or clinically obese. The participants were separated into two groups one of which received a 400 milligram Meratrim® supplement whereas the other was given a placebo.

Each of the subjects took their assigned supplement or placebo twice a day 30 minutes before breakfast and before dinner. The participants were maintained on a typical 2,000 calorie a day diet and were instructed to take a 30-minute walk 5 days a week for the duration of the 8-week-long study.

The results after the 8-week study are as follows:

• The Meratrim® supplement group lost an average of 11.2 pounds each.

• The placebo group lost an average of 2.9 pounds.

• During the first 2 weeks the Meratrim® group lost 4.2 pounds with a 1.66 inch waist size reduction on average whereas the placebo group lost 1.2 pounds on average with a 0.33 inch waist size reduction

• At the end of 8 weeks the Meratrim® group lost 4.66 inches compared to the placebo group who lost 2.52 inches.

• Markers of fat were found in increased levels in the blood showing that fat was likely being blocked from depositing in the body.

• No major side effects were observed in either of the two groups.

The conclusion reached by the researchers of the study is that supplementation with the herbal blend known as Meratrim® is well-tolerated by the human body and resulted in a greater degree of weight loss than placebo over 8 weeks.
