Weight Loss Tips from the Dr. Oz Flat Belly Plan
On a recent episode of The Dr. Oz Show, Dr. Oz brings in 3 special guests who are experts in their field and specialize in helping people find their ever-elusive flat belly. The 3 experts explain to viewers how to achieve a flat belly by following their advice that focuses on specific targets involving diet, hormones and exercise.
“When we want to target belly fat specifically, it’s about eating a certain kind of fat,” says Ms. Liz Vaccareillo author of a bestselling weight loss book titled “Flat Belly Diet.”
“The stress hormone cortisol really can signal your brain that you are hungry and then specifically signal your belly fat cells to store fat, so whenever we are under stress we are always getting that eat/store signal in our body and we have to short circuit it or we are never going to have a flat belly,” says Shaw Talbott, PhD a nutritional biochemist.
“If you do strategic exercises that target the core, you’ll lose the bloat as well,” says Jaime Brenkus, trainer and creator of the “8 Minute Abs” workout.
“This is a plan designed specifically to target belly fat, it is 1600 calories, and it offers you a lot of food so you’re not going to feel hungry. That way, you can keep on this program―if you want―for as long as you want,” says Dr. Oz.
The following is a summary of tips that Dr. Oz and his special guests recommend for achieving a flat belly through Dr. Oz’s Flat Belly Plan by focusing on 4 goals:
1. Shrinking your belly fat cells
2. Shedding excess pounds
3. Reducing inflammation
4. Beating the bloat
Shrink your belly fat cells
Belly fat plan tip #1: Eat 6 ounces of plain low-fat Greek yogurt before every meal.
“A new study found that people who ate yogurt while dieting lost 81 percent more belly fat than people who didn’t,” says Dr. Oz as he explains that eating excess carbohydrates and sugary foods actually feeds fat cells that are located around hour waist line. Eating yogurt before eating these kinds of foods, however, will inhibit the carbs and sugars from making it to the fat cells and in turn starve the fat cells and cause them to shrink states Dr. Oz.
Shed your excess pounds
Belly fat plan tip #2: Eat 3 MUFA meals a day
“MUFA stands for mono-unsaturated fatty acids and these are the healthy fats found in plant-based foods… things like nuts, seeds, peanut and peanut butter, olives and olive oil, and avocado, “ says Ms. Vaccareillo as she explains that recent research shows that a calorie-controlled diet rich in MUFA helps target belly fat specifically.
Using this research info, Ms. Vaccareillo then developed a belly fat diet where during a 28-day period her participants on a calorie controlled diet supplemented with foods rich in mono-unsaturated fatty acids achieved an average loss of 33 percent of their belly fat.
According to Ms. Vaccareillo, a MUFA meal on her flat belly diet consists of a 1 lean protein, 1 complex carbohydrate, unlimited vegetables, and 1 MUFA for a total or 350 calories or less.
Reduce your inflammation
Belly fat plan tip #3: Soothe inflammation by eating an afternoon anti-inflammatory snack
“Flavonoids we typically think of as an antioxidant, but they are also very anti-inflammatory,” says Dr. Talbott as he tells viewers that in order to find foods that are rich in inflammation-reducing flavonoids that they should look for fruits and vegetables such as berries and bell peppers that are very colorful.
“Having this in the afternoon is equivalent in flavonoid content to drinking a cup of green tea and it’s very anti-inflammatory for the body,” says Dr. Talbott.
Beating your bloat
Belly fat plan tip #4: Drink ginger iced tea with mint and lemon
“Getting rid of the bloat increases the maximum benefit of exercise. You want to push the muscle closer to the surface of the skin and getting rid of that bloat really helps it. I give this to all of my clients…it’s really simple,” says Jaime Brenkus as he explains that the ginger aids digestion while the mint releases the buildup of gases in the stomach. The lemon not only adds flavor to the drink, but is also a natural diuretic that further reduces bloating.
To make the flat belly ginger iced tea combine:
• 3 bags of ginger tea
• 1 cup of fresh mint
• Juice from 1 lemon
• 2 cups of water
• 2 cups of ice
