Man Loses 25 Pounds in 50 days - Here’s How He Did It
A man, a plan and a can-do attitude―writer Andy Leeks (with a little help from a nutritionist) came up with a 50-day personal challenge that resulted in his losing 25 pounds in 50 days. Here’s how he did it by taking an unusual approach to common diet plans that dieters use every day.
According to a recent article written by author Andy Leeks for Yahoo, Mr. Leeks had a problem that most dieters face - boredom with a diet that leads to eventual regaining of lost weight. But what separates Mr. Leeks from other dieters is that he came up with the idea that if he could find a way to beat his dieting boredom, he just might lose those extra pounds for good.
That idea turned into a plan as Mr. Leeks created a self-imposed challenge to put himself through 10 different diet plans in 50 days to see if he could beat dieting boredom long enough to lose a significant amount of weight. By crash-dieting via 10 plans in a specific order, Mr. Leeks discovered a weight loss plan that worked for him resulting in losing 25 pounds in 50 days.
However, to ensure that he was making a smart choice on which dieting plans and the order he would tackle each during his 50-day dieting marathon, he recruited the assistance of a nutritionist who guided him on his diet selection and order so that he would not become severely deficient in any one nutrient during consecutive diet plan switches.
The following is a summary of his diet challenge that helped him achieve weight loss success:
Diet Days 1-5: The 5:2 Diet (5 pounds lost in 5 days)
The 5: 2 diet is relatively simple requiring that five days out of the week you eat a normal amount of calories with no restriction on food items such as a slice of chocolate cake or a nice, thick juicy burger―just don’t overeat during any of those 5 days. The remaining two days of the week (and they can be split up or followed sequentially) you are allowed only a total of 500 calories (600 if you are a man) per day. Expected weight loss is approximately 1 pound a week if you stick with this diet.
Diet Days 6-10: The Special K Diet (5 pounds lost in 5 days)
The manufacturers of Special K cereal have a “ Simple 5 Plan” diet that promises losing up to 5 pounds in 2 weeks. Each day you replace your 2 normal meals with 2 Special K options that include any of the following: Cold or Hot Cereals, Flatbread Sandwiches, Protein Bars, or Shakes. And, each day you replace your 2 daily snacks with any of their recommended tasty options that includes Special K branded Brownie Bites, Cracker Chips, Pastry Crisps Snack Bars, or Crackers. The remaining daily meal is a recommended normal, healthy meal per their website.
Diet Days 11-15: The Balanced Diet (4 pounds lost in 5 days)
The Balanced Diet that Mr. Leek followed for 5 days is from the UK’s National Health Service’s equivalent of the USDA’s dietary guidelines in which the dieter is required to make good food choices toward eating varied and balanced meals that consist of:
• Plenty of fruit and vegetables.
• Plenty of starchy foods, such as bread, rice, potatoes and pasta.
• Some meat, fish, eggs, beans and other non-dairy sources of protein
• Some milk and dairy foods.
• Just a small amount of food and drinks that are high in fat and/or sugar.
Mr. Leek recommends after the 50-day challenge for dieters to adopt this type of diet as a way to maintain your weight loss for long-term success and healthy living.
Diet Days 16-20: The Juice Diet (5 pounds lost in 5 days)
The juice diet is just what it’s called—nothing but juiced fruits and vegetables as your meals throughout each day.
Diet Days 21-25: The Atkins Diet (1.5 pounds lost in 5 days)
Basically this is a diet for carnivores that is limited to protein-rich foods like meat, fish, eggs and cheese. Forget about breads, fruits or any other sources of carbohydrates. The Atkins diet has been advertised as one that really works; however, it takes a lot of willpower to strictly stick to for any length of time and many beleive that it is likely unhealthy in the long run.
Diet Days 26-30: The Raw Food Diet (3 pounds lost in 5 days)
Here’s where you switch from being a carnivore to becoming a herbivore. The raw food diet requires eating a limited set of uncooked, unprocessed fruits and vegetables. While nutritionally rich, some point out that eating uncooked food exposes a dieter to an increased risk of consuming bacteria and viruses that would otherwise have been killed off during cooking. Incidently, Mr. Leeks admitted to becoming sick during this diet phase and having to spend it in bed.
Diet Days 31-35: The Baby Food Diet (1 pound lost in 5 days)
The Baby Food Diet is a calorie-restricting diet that requires you to replace two of your three main meals a day with baby food. While simple to eat, you may have to do so in private to prevent odd stares and appearing on YouTube. No mention of whether breast milk is allowed.
Diet Days 36-40: The Calorie-Controlled Diet (2 pounds lost in 5 days)
Here is a diet that is the basic foundation of losing weight—fewer calories in, more calories burned. To achieve this it is necessary to learn how to count calories and stick to a limit such as 1,200, 1,500 or 2,000 calories per day as long as it is lower than the number of calories burned per day. No foods are off limits as long as you stick to your calorie limit. Calories counting apps or meal trackers are recommended to help balance your numbers consumed and burned.
Diet Days 41-45: The Grapefruit Diet (1 pound lost in 5 days)
Believed to induce fat burning, followers of the grapefruit diet recommend either eating a grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice before or after each balanced meal.
Diet Days 46-50: The Cabbage Soup Diet (3 pounds lost in 5 days)
The cabbage soup diet has been around for a long time. Basically you just replace EVERY meal with a bowl or two of cabbage soup. But that’s it. Hard to stick to, this is a diet that does work but is realistically unsustainable for more than a few days.
