That’s what one doctor promises on The Dr. Oz Show with a new diet plan that he designed based on his observations on how eating like a gastric surgery patient can help you lose weight - but without the surgery.

"The secret to losing 15 pounds in one week is eating anything that you want, but just 5 bites a meal,” says Dr. Oz as he introduces his special guest Dr. Alwin Lewis, the creator of “The 5-Bite Diet” plan. Dr. Lewis tells viewers that his diet plan originates from the 5 bites per meal regimen of gastric bypass patients. When he tried the diet on himself, and then on his obese and overweight patients, he found that both he and they lost significant amounts of weight. See why Gastric Bypass surgery really works.

“I’ve treated about 815 patients for weight loss. I have a total of 16,115 pounds lost. You don’t have to spend any extra money on food and you don’t even have to engage in a regular exercise routine. The 5 bite diet will absolutely get you to your goal whatever your goal might be,” promises Dr. Lewis.

THE 5 BITE DIET PLAN

So what does a 5 bite diet entail? As an example, Dr. Oz and Dr. Lewis showed viewers a sampling of what the meal plan for one day looks like for someone on a 5 bite diet:

Dr. Lewis explains that the reason for no food for breakfast is that he believes that since a person has not eaten since dinner the night before, that the body is now in a fasting mode upon waking up in the morning. He believes that by extending the fasting period just a few hours longer actually induces the body to consume even more abdominal fat right off as you start your day. The multivitamin is to ensure that you are not starving nutritionally.

Lunch: 5 bites of anything

One example shown on stage is a small hamburger divided into 5 bite-size pieces. Dr. Lewis tells viewers that to him 5 bites of a hamburger is an excellent choice because it provides protein with some nutrients and because it tastes good and is very satisfying to most taste buds.

“The key to any successful diet is that you are able to follow it, that you are taking in food that you enjoy,” says Dr. Lewis.

Dinner: 5 bites of anything

For dinner, Dr. Lewis provides 3 bites of macaroni and cheese with 2 bites of apple pie as being acceptable choices for his diet plan.

However, Dr. Oz appears not to be buying into the idea that people can follow this diet plan and still be healthy. Dr. Oz explains that to be healthy the body needs to take in specific nutrients such as iron, calcium, magnesium, protein, healthy fats, good carbohydrates, etc. all of which are derived from eating enough of the right kinds of food. Without any of these diet building blocks, he tells viewers that the human body will crumble and start falling down.

“You might be smaller, but it’s not the right way… not the healthy way. It’s not about the calories―it’s about the nutrients,” says Dr. Oz explaining his reasons for why he does not believe this diet is healthy.

Dr. Lewis counters Dr. Oz’s concerns by stating that he believes that people on his diet will not be nutritionally deficient because the body in his opinion stores enough of these nutrients throughout a month of eating foods this way.

“What I am giving patients―or people―is control. We all know how to gain weight. We know how to put on five pounds in a weekend. But what we don’t have is good control over how to lose that weight just as quickly, just as easily. What I am doing is giving patients that ability,” says Dr. Lewis.

While Dr. states that what he finds positive about the 5 bite diet is that it helps make people mindful of every bite they take in, he expresses concern that engaging in this kind of eating behavior will lead to nutritional problems.

“My concern with the 5 bite diet is that it’s a real temptation for unhealthy foods that throws our body out of balance. The real goal, I think, ought to be to be on a diet that will keep people healthy and skinny at the same time—not one or the other. I don’t want you counting anything―it’s the nutrients, not the calories or the bites,” recommends Dr. Oz.

i want to try this diet but I would like to have my 5bites for breakfast and five bite for lunch. Lunch will be my last meal
I started this 5 bite diet yesterday @199 pounds, today is day 2 and still weigh 199. Let's see how this will go. I really hope it works out for me. :( My goal is to loose 60lbs.

Hi, I have been doing this diet for 35 years. Everyone has always told me that it is not healthy. I am now 50 and weigh 207 lbs. A couple years ago I had the flu. I had no desire to eat after I was over the flu. I lost 18 lbs in 2 weeks and figured that I would keep it going. I was down to 175 lbs and felt and looked good. A year later It started to gain back up to 195 lbs. I joined the fitness club and worked out 3 times a day. Drank a gallon of water a day and a large power aid on the way to the gym. In two months I had maintained a weight of 180 lbs and EVERYONE said "Man You Look Great". It felt good. Key to all of this. Stop OVER eating. I am going on vacation in 15 days. So this does actually work? Just do it as simple as taking the five bites with the meal and a minimum or workout?
I tried this and made it to the 3rd day. Lost 6 pounds! But then I gave in. Any advice on how not to give up?

Hello everyone, so my sister and i are starting the 5 bite diet and would love to connect with others who are on, have been on or even thought about starting this diet. We made a group called the 5 bite diet warriors on Facebook, and were documenting it on YouTube. We would love having support and share our struggles and accomplishments with everyone!
I did this diet in April 2015.I lost 12lb in one week. It was hard at first but it got easier. This diet really works. I am a mother of a 2yr old and I have the baby weight still on and I can see it going away. Highly recommend this diet :)

Depends on how strict you are. So far I lost 20.3 in one month, there were a lot of cheating so I'm sure if I didn't cheat I could have did a lot better.

Yes, when you feel up to it, I personally wouldn't do it for the first week because you will probably feel pretty weak, but after you feel better there is nothing wrong with a little exercise.

Each bite equals a tablespoon, so it is about a 1/3 cup of food.

The basic idea behind Dr. Lewis's protocol is to eat like you have had gastric bypass surgery (but without the cost, side effects, or long-term follow-up). Bariatrc surgery leaves a person with a stomach "pouch" that is about the size of a thumb. Afterwards, the patient can only eat a few tablespoons of well-chewed, nutrient-dense foods during each meal. People who have had bariatric surgery are also required to take sips of liquid all day long in order to stay hydrated and take vitamins every day in order to avoid nutrient deficiencies. Since the surgery is permanent, these requirements are life-long. On the other hand, Dr. Lewis's protocol lasts only as long as it takes to lose the weight, and afterwards, maintenance would ensue (as happens after losing weight using any diet). A similar effect to bariatric surgery (smaller stomach) can be achieved by routinely ingesting just a small volume of food at each mealtime. Per Dr. Lewis, eating a similar volume of food during each meal will cause your stomach to "re-size" so that it will start to signal "fullness" or "satisfaction" when that volume is reached. For example, if you repeatedly eat a large pizza for each meal, your stomach will stretch so that its "full signal" will only sound when that size of a meal is ingested. Also, if you routinely eat a small volume (5 to 10 bites) of food during each meal, your stomach will get used to that, and it will learn to give a "full signal" when that volume of food is ingested. In Dr. Lewis's interviews, he uses a Snickers bar to help visualize the volume of food per meal a person should aim for when using his protocol. Re-sizing your stomach to be satisfied with small-volume intakes takes about one to two weeks. However, if you start to increase your intake volume during meals and want to go back to being satiated with smaller-volume meals, you will have to again "re-train" your stomach. It is interesting to note that folks who have undergone bariatric surgery can eventually "stretch" their pouch if they start eating too much. They, also, will wind up having to "re-train" their pouch to be satisfied with smaller-volume intakes again. Dr. Lewis's protocol also incorporates intermittent fasting (IF). That is why he suggests eating nothing but black coffee and a vitamin pill until the lunchtime meal. If interested in the subject of IF, a quick Internet search will bring up lots of information on its many benefits.
Agree - We used to say "my stomach shrunk" after we changed our diet to eat less - like in college when we had little money and few groceries. You get full much more quickly.
