Fight Your Pain with These 3 Easy Kitchen Cures Right Now

We often hear about how that everyone has their favorite comfort food for when they are tired and feeling a little down. But did you know that food can not only be effective for easing emotional pain, that it can also ease physical pain as well? In a recent episode of The Dr. Oz Show, Dr. Oz and his food expert special guest show viewers that you can fight your pain with some simple kitchen cures.

“How effective can these foods be for pain?” Dr. Oz asks his special guest Jack Bishop, the editorial director of the highly acclaimed and popular America’s Test Kitchen TV series.

“It’s hugely important. When you are cooking, you are making choices about what you are putting into your body. And if you’ve got specific issues—specific foods can help,” says Mr. Bishop who with Dr. Oz explains that foods can replace medicine in many cases of body pain.

The following is a summary of foods found in your kitchen that can cure pain:

Food Cure for Headaches: Cremini mushrooms

“Cremini mushrooms are a really great source of pain-fighting nutrients,” says Mr. Bishop who recommends that when selecting Cremini mushrooms at your local grocery to choose those sold in whole bulk form. Avoid mushrooms that are broken or sliced, and be sure to smell them before buying. He explains that the mushrooms should have a nice earthy smell to them. Avoid the ones that smell sour or fermented.

Mr. Bishop’s cooking advice for preparing a delicious pain-fighting mushroom dish is as follow:

1. Do not wash the mushrooms until just before cooking to avoid sliming.

2. Cut the whole mushrooms into large chunks.

3. Sauté the mushrooms in a pan with a little oil—the idea here is to drive away the moisture locked inside the mushrooms.

4. After 5-10 minutes when the mushrooms have dried, hold off adding seasoning such as garlic or soy sauce or shallots until the very last minute to avoid burning your food in the pan while giving the mushrooms a flavorful glaze.

Dr. Oz recommends 2 cups of Cremini mushrooms, 3 times a week to cure your headache pain.

Food Cure for Muscle Pain: Sweet Potatoes

“One of the reasons why people get muscle pain is due to potassium problems,” says Dr. Oz. “Without potassium, our muscles spasm.”

Dr. Oz tells viewers that while everyone thinks of eating bananas to keep their potassium levels up, that the sweet potato actually has more potassium than a banana.

Mr. Bishop recommends that when preparing a sweet potato dish, the best way is to braise (i.e. cook over low heat in a covered pot) the sweet potato and then mash it using the following steps:

1. For tastier results select sweet potatoes that are still orange on the inside.

2. Slice the sweet potato into relatively small ¼-½ inch slices.

3. Place approximately 2 pounds of potatoes with ⅓ cup of liquid that can consist of water, or orange juice or broth and add a touch of maple syrup, seasoning or lemon zest for added flavor.

4. Cook covered for 30 minutes over low heat.

5. Once tender, mash the potatoes in the pot without draining and add salt and pepper and herbs to taste.

Dr. Oz recommends 1cup of sweet potatoes 3 times a week to cure your muscle pain.

Food Cure for Indigestion: Ginger

For digestive system difficulties Mr. Bishop recommends treating your stomach pain with ginger.

“It helps soothe the muscles of the intestinal tract. You get less diarrhea, less nausea, less cramping overall,” adds Dr. Oz who recommends treating stomach pain with ginger over using antacids and other related meds for indigestion.

“Ginger is really super nutritious. The biggest problem people have with ginger is ‘how on earth do you prepare this?’” says Mr. Bishop who answers this question by explaining that ginger is so fibrous that it is very difficult to slice, and therefore recommends that a better way to prepare ginger for eating is to grate the ginger into a purée. Using the fine side of a kitchen box grater he explains will break down the fibers of ginger, which can then be spread like a paste over bread, your meals or used in cooking.

“The correct dose is a quarter of a teaspoon a day,” says Dr. Oz. “I put it in my ‘Green Drink’.”
