FDA Posts Aspirin-Related Weight Loss Supplement Recall

Recalled weight loss products

Are you one of the many who are allergic to aspirin and therefore avoid aspirin-containing health products? If so, then you will want to know about this recent recall of several weight loss supplements.

According to the FDA, consumers of weight loss supplements need to be aware of a voluntary recall by Novacare, LLC of Murray, Utah that manufactures a significant number of weight loss products. These products it turns out, were recently analyzed by FDA scientists who found that they contain the undeclared drug ingredient salicylic acid—a close relative of the class of active ingredients in aspirin known as salicylates or more precisely acetylsalicylic acid (ASA).

Salicylic acid is acutely toxic, and therefore is not recommended for oral use and is harmful if swallowed. Salicylic acid is typically used topically to treat many skin disorders, such as acne, dandruff, psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis of the skin and scalp, calluses, corns, common warts, and plantar warts.

According to the FDA, ingestion of salicylic acid can result in nausea, vomiting, gastrointestinal irritation, loss of hearing, sweating to severe reactions of blurred vision, mental confusion, cerebral edema and cardiorespiratory arrest.

Because salicylic acid is in the same class as aspirin—a pain reliever and blood thinner―individuals who are allergic to aspirin typically defined as having or had a severe allergic reaction such as a severe rash, hives, difficulty breathing, or dizziness should avoid all products containing this class of chemical ingredients.

Furthermore, if you are elderly and have a history of stomach ulcers or bleeding problems, consume ≥ 3 alcoholic drinks per day, or take blood thinning medications already, then you are at a higher risk for toxicity from this ingredient when taking the recalled weight loss products. Why this harmful ingredient is in weight loss products manufactured by Novacare, LLC remains undisclosed at this time.

Consumers who have purchased the following list of recalled supplements should contact their physician or healthcare provider if they have experienced any health issues that could be attributed to salicylic acid toxicity.
