“This is the fat that you eat to lose the fat you don’t want,” says Dr. Oz as he tells viewers about a revolutionary way to lose weight by choosing foods that other cultures integrate into their diet that works wonders on weight control.

The miracle fat? Fat found in coconut oil. According to Dr. Oz, coconut oil has been a staple for centuries in many tropical regions and that science is just now learning how that coconut oil can increase weight loss.

“Coconut oil is loaded with antioxidants that are powerful for the body,” says Dr. Oz. “It’s popular in everything from moisturizer to hair conditioner. But now we are learning the benefits of coconut oil for your insides with exciting new science on saturated fats that points to the using the superpowers of coconut oil for weight loss.”

Dr. Oz explains that coconut oil can be used for cooking or as a spread to replace butter and that it has a vanilla-like nutty taste to it that is better than butter. Its consistency at room temp is firm, but once placed on warm toast or a muffin, it melts and spreads easily for a flavorful side to your breakfast meal.

“The first way that coconut oil helps you to fight fat is that it helps keep you full for hours,” says Dr. Oz.

He explains that coconut oil, like other types of fats, makes you feel fuller because it sends signals to your brain telling you that you have all the calories you need right now. However, by substituting saturated fat-containing butter—which should be avoided—with coconut oil for one year, that up to 6 pounds of weight can be lost.

“The second way that coconut oil can help you fight fat is that it fires up your metabolism,” says Dr. Oz.

Dr. Oz tells viewers that while a lot of fats do supply energy that is eventually burned up by your metabolism, that it is a relatively slow process as the fats get broken down. In comparison, however, he states that the speed with which coconut oil makes it to the liver is much quicker and leads to a boost in fat burning metabolism. He mentions one study where women were fed 2 tablespoons of coconut oil a day throughout the study and that it led to weight loss.

A third way that coconut oil can help cause weight loss is that it is a fat that tends not to be stored as fat in the body. When getting your fats from butter, explains Dr. Oz, the majority of the fats become the fat that is stored in your body that makes you look different with increased weight gain.

“When you eat coconut oil, less than half of the fat in coconut oil actually contributes to the fat in your body…it’s a very efficient way to get calories that are not going to make you look different,” says Dr. Oz

To help viewers understand how to apply coconut oil to their diet, Dr. Oz offers the 3 following rules that must be adhered to, to prevent going overboard on eating too much fat:

1. Take only 2 tablespoon of coconut oil per day to replace your fats used in cooking and/or as a spread.

2. Look at the labels on bottles of coconut oil and buy only the ones listed as “virgin coconut oil.”

3. Avoid bottles that state “partially hydrogenated” on the label of ingredients because this is an indication of it containing trans-fats.

Aside from the health benefits of coconut oil, it has cooking benefits such as its ability to cook foods under high heat. Unlike using olive oil, which burns easily used in a stir fry, coconut oil does not burn so easily and can even be used in place of vegetable oil for popping popcorn.

The recommendation for popping popcorn with coconut oil is to apply only a thin coating of coconut oil to a pot or pan followed by one layer of popcorn seeds. Shake while cooking under high heat and remove from the stove once the popping is nearly complete. Then, add a little more coconut oil to the popped popcorn, sprinkle on some kosher salt and cayenne pepper and you will have a flavorful healthy snack without the harmful fats of using butter or trans-fat cooking oils.
