According to a recent Fox News health story, Orangetheory Fitness―an alternative option for losing weight for gym-goers who find traditional group fitness classes unchallenging or ineffective―is helping dieters who struggle and bounce from one weight loss program to another, to finally achieve weight loss success with their specialized approach during workouts.

The OrangeTheory workout sessions involve helping customers optimize their fat burning experience by wearing heartrate monitors throughout class to help them reach and maintain heart rates in the target "orange" zone for at least 12 to 20 minutes during a 60-minute interval-based workout session that costs between $28 and $32 on average.

Getting Into the Orange Zone

Achieving a heat rate that is approximately 84 or 85 percent of your maximum heart rate during those 12-20 minutes in each session puts your body into what is referred to as an “anabolic threshold” that leads to what exercise experts call the "EPOC" effect―Excess Post-exercise Oxygen Consumption―that give your body a calorie “afterburn” benefit that continues well after the workout.

“EPOC occurs when our bodies require excess oxygen after a workout in order to return ourselves to our normal physiologic steady state,” Dr. Kevin Campbell, a cardiologist in North Carolina, told FoxNews.com. “The best way to think of EPOC is a way for your body to pay off an 'oxygen debt' after an intense workout. This is why our bodies are able to burn more calories after working out.”

Throughout the workouts, overhead video monitors help the participants move from one station to the next depicting the moves, showing how many reps to do per set as well as provide a quick look at their individual heart rates so that they can see how they are progressing toward reaching the orange zone.

“It’s 100 percent full-body in nature,” Benjamin Horen, an OrangeTheory fitness coach, told FoxNews.com. “It’s weight and resistance training, its core exercise, its high cardio, it’s rowing— it’s as much as we can do in over the course of an hour to keep you moving.”
