Avoid These 4 Diet Lies and Start Losing Weight Today
Are you among the estimated 9 out of 10 women who have fallen victim to these 4 biggest diet lies by the weight loss industry? Discover now what those lies are and how by debunking them you can start losing weight today.
“Have you given up on your weight because no matter how hard you diet you can’t lose a pound? Well, one man is here to say it’s not your fault,” says Dr. Oz as he introduces his special guest Dr. Joel Fuhrman - author of “The End of Dieting” - who reveals to viewers the 4 biggest diet lies that are making you fat.
According to Dr. Fuhrman, the reason for why there are so many lies and misinformation when it comes to dieting is that the true goal of the diet industry is to fatten their profits - even at the cost of knowingly fattening up the public.
“Inherently, the diet industry is trying to sell to people goods or a service or a book. They are looking for what people want to buy, like some sort of story to tell people, what’s going to sell the most, what appeals the most to their preferences - it’s not focused on what is going to make people live longer…or healthier,” says Dr. Fuhrman. “It’s focused on what is going to sell the best.”
Dr. Fuhrman states that we need to rethink dieting and health by looking at the science and make a change by focusing more on whether a diet is longevity-based rather than weight–based. And, that by knowing about these 4 diet lies and subsequently avoiding them, it will then lead to healthy eating habits from which natural weight loss will automatically follow.
“They [women] are going to lose weight without ever having to worry about dieting again,” says Dr. Fuhrman.
Diet Lie #1: Eating Small Frequent Meals Will Boost Your Metabolism
According to Dr. Fuhrman, by eating small frequent meals throughout the day—approximately 6 meals per day—you are not allowing the body enough time to burn off the glycogen that is stored in your liver.
Sugar is initially stored in the liver and is managed by the body as the first source of calorie burning as you move about during the day. If the remaining sugar is not burned off in the liver before the next meal, it is then stored away as fat. So, when a person keeps on adding even small amounts of calories throughout the day without burning off the sugar in the liver, the excess sugar (glycogen) then becomes stored in the body as fat.
Furthermore, by keeping liver sugar levels high, a person on a diet never gets to the actual burning of the stored body fat because the body is still working on the sugar that is in the liver.
Dr. Fuhrman’s advice to counter diet lie #1
“You want to expand the time as much as you can between the meals,” says Dr. Fuhrman. His rules for weight loss include:
• Three meals per day are best.
• No snacking between meals.
• Do not eat late at night—finish your dinner and then stop for the day.
Diet Lie #2: Cook with Healthy Oils to Lose Weight
“Most Americans are eating between 400 to 700 calories per day just from oil,” says Dr. Fuhrman who points out that even supposedly healthy oil like olive oil goes straight into the body as stored fat without any chance of being burned off because it is taken in by the body so quickly.
Dr. Fuhrman recommends getting your healthy oils from those found in nuts because they stay in your system longer before being processed into fat and thereby giving it more time to be burned off.
“When you eat nuts and seeds as a source of fat instead of oil, it’s absorbed in 3-4 hours instead of 3-4 minutes,” says Dr. Fuhrman.
Furthermore, he tells viewers that eating nuts is actually helping reroute fat into your waste through your digestive tract rather than storing it in your body.
Dr. Fuhrman’s advice to counter diet lie #2
• Get your healthy fats from nuts and seeds rather than from cooking oil.
• Cook food without oil using water or tomato sauce in the pan as you fry.
Diet Lie #3: You Must Exercise to Lose Weight
Dr. Fuhrman points out that exercising is great for increasing your longevity and improving your health. However, when it comes to weight loss, the real solution is changing your American diet and that begins by starting in the kitchen.
Dr. Fuhrman’s advice to counter diet lie #3
• “You’ve got to lose weight in the kitchen not in the gym. Lose weight in the kitchen, gain muscle in the gym,” recommends Dr. Fuhrman.
Diet Lie #4: You Can Have One Cheat Day a Week
The problem with having a cheat day or a cheat meal explains Dr. Fuhrman, is that what we are dealing with here is a food addiction problem. And, not unlike being an alcoholic, taking that one step off the wagon will likely lead to derailing your entire weight loss efforts.
“That cheat day puts them back to square one again and it can very well trigger a binge for 3-4 days that derails all of the benefits they got. It yo-yo’s the weight and they fail on their diet,” says Dr. Fuhrman.
The danger with taking a small treat to stifle a craving is that it causes dopamine to be released that activates the pleasure center of the brain. This in turn induces a person to keep seeking a treat to maintain those pleasurable sensations. For food addicts, treats are their drug of choice as they feed their head.
Dr. Fuhrman’s advice to counter diet lie #4
• Curb your sweet cravings and cut out sugar by eating fruit.
• Try alternative treats like a black bean brownie.
• Eat your dessert with dinner and not afterward before going to bed.
