“It seems that antidepressants have the ability to help the brain chemistry get a little more buffed up so that it better tolerates the wild hormone fluctuations that otherwise are affecting it,” says Ms. Holmes. “Antidepressants come in many formulas and you have to talk about it with your doctor because you have to pick the right one for you, and they do have side effects that you sometimes have to work through the first month getting used to them.”

Solution #2: Progesterone creams
“We know that progesterone is one of the hormones that affects the brain. We also know that it's one of the hormones that changes quite a bit in these perimenopause years. So for some women, replenishing just a low dose of the missing progesterone calms down the roller coaster,” states Ms. Holmes. She also adds that “…they are available in health food stores…you want to get a good brand and you definitely want to make sure that the label says “USP progesterone” on it so that you will know that the active ingredient is there and not just an extract.”

Solution #3: Cut or limit caffeine, alcohol and sugar.
“We’ve definitely seen a pattern in women. Sugar, caffeine, alcohol and then add stress of life into that and it’s going to exaggerate any hormonally triggered symptoms that women are experiencing—almost at an age. But at perimenopause——what else have you got?!” she quips. “You know you have to do what you can to reduce other factors that might be triggering the emotional outbursts that are coming from the brain.”

Solution #4: Therapy
“There are many forms of therapy. There’s couple’s counseling and there’s cognitive-behavioral therapy that helps you work on the here and the now, and how you are going to cope with the challenges you face day to day,” says Ms. Holmes.
