For nearly a decade researchers worldwide have been investigating a link between vitamin D deficiency and autoimmune diseases, particularly multiple sclerosis (MS). In patients with the autoimmune hyperthyroid disorder Graves' disease the link has been explored even further with evidence suggesting that genetic polymorphism of the vitamin D receptor sometimes seen in patients with Graves' disease prevents adequate absorption of the vitamin D hormone.

According to a new study, Vitamin D is essential for muscle strength in adolescent girls, yet vitamin D deficiencies may be undetected. Vitamin D deficiency was discovered a large portion of 99 adolescent girls who took part in a study that measured vitamin D levels and muscle strength. The researchers found there were no symptoms among the vitamin D deficient girls. Furthermore, the girls performed poorly on muscle strength and velocity tests that used jumping exercises.

FDA Warns Against Dietary Supplement Venon HYPERDRIVE 3.0

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a warning today advising consumers not to take Venom HYPERDRIVE 3.0.

Venom HYPERDRIVE 3.0 is a product sold as a dietary supplement found to contain sibutramine. Sibutramine, a controlled substance available in the United States by prescription which carries the risk of abuse or addiction.

Coca-cola faces a lawsuit over allegations that their vitamin enhanced drink, "Glaceau Vitaminwater" dupes consumers. However, Diana Garza Ciarlante, a Coca-Cola spokeswoman, calls the allegations "ludicrous", saying that today's consumers are savvy enough to read labels and sort out the nutritive value of what they consume. Rather than protecting consumers, Garza claims the suit is "about increasing the readership of CSPI's increasingly irrelevant newsletter."

A new March of Dimes survey conducted by the Gallup organization and funded by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reveals only 11 percent of women of childbearing age said they knew that folic acid should be consumed prior to pregnancy. Nearly 40 percent of American women of childbearing age (ages 18-45), say they take a daily multivitamin supplement containing folic acid. However, the rate drops to 27 percent among women 18 to 24 years old.

Fortification of corn masa flour products could increase folic acid intake by nearly 20 percent for Mexican-Americans, who are at a 30-40 percent higher risk for a number of severe brain and spinal birth defects, according to a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). 'Sun Chlorella A' Promotes Overall Health

A small nutrigenomic open label pilot study, published in the Journal of Medicinal Food, tested whole food supplement "Sun Chlorella A" and the impact on gene expression. The study suggests that Sun Chlorella influenced gene expression related to cholesterol and blood glucose.

The Chlorella study involved 34 subjects. Participants ingested four grams of "Sun Chlorella A" tablets each morning and evening for a 16-week period. Researchers conducted blood biochemical tests and analyzed gene expression profile in whole blood cells before and after Chlorella intake.

Vitamin E - No benefit for preventing cancer, including colon, esophageal, gastric, pancreatic or liver. No benefit for preventing cardiovascular disease and people who took over 400IU's a day had a higher risk of dying from heart failure and other causes.

Vitamin E plus Selenium - No benefit for prostate cancer and maybe did more harm than good.
