Written by health journalist Bill Sardi, the 16-page guide says achieving adequate levels of vitamin D will do more to improve health than lowering cholesterol, taking an aspirin tablet, exercising or taking a multivitamin.
The guide says the public is going to have to disregard outdated advice given by their doctors, dieticians, medical textbooks and even The National Academy of Sciences, in order to obtain the amount of vitamin D needed for optimal health.
Clearly, the textbooks and doctors provide outdated information concerning vitamin D. "There is no way a one-size fits all recommended intake level of vitamin D can ensure adequacy levels for this essential nutrient when the need appreciably increases during childhood growth, pregnancy and lactation, among dark-skinned individuals, among those who don't get outdoors during the midday hours, and during winter months, particularly in northern climates," says Bill Sardi. The guide helps readers determine the right amount of vitamin D for their family.
Calling the current recommended "Adequate Intake" (AI) for vitamin D the "Inadequate Intake" level, the guide notes that the AI ranges from 200 international units (IU) for children to 600 IU for senior adults (the "Inadequate Intake"), which wouldn't even provide the amount of natural vitamin D produced from two minutes of total-body midday summer sun exposure. Over the years many health authorities have recommended 20-30 minutes of daily sun exposure to ensure good health.
The guide says 2000 IU "safe upper limit" is absurd -- it represents only about six minutes spent in the sun. There has never been a toxic level of vitamin D from prolonged sun exposure reported, and total-body summer sun exposure will make about 10,000 IU of natural vitamin D3 in just 20-30 minutes, so the 2000 IU upper limit appears to be too low to achieve optimal health. Optimal blood levels to prevent bone fractures in senior Americans, provide adequate vitamin D during pregnancy and lactation, far exceed the current upper safe limit.
