"This decision is long overdue in my opinion," said Joel Schlessinger M.D., founder of LovelySkin.com. "We have known for years that the system is 'broken', but with the FDA's recent statement, consumers finally know that what they get over the counter may not be protecting them fully. With the improved system, consumers will see which sunscreens actually work for both UVA and UVB rays."

Last week, the FDA proposed long awaited rules covering the ingredients, packaging and testing of sunscreens that claim to protect against ultraviolet B (UVB) and ultraviolet A (UVA) rays. Many products currently on the market were found to be deficient in providing adequate protection from the sun's damaging rays. In reality, consumers may have to wait another two years before these products substantiate such claims, but Schlessinger says that there are good options available now, but probably not the ones that consumers would reach for on the local pharmacy shelf.

"These sunscreens that contain both forms of protection in an adequate amount are fairly pricey to produce at present, so most manufacturers don't go to the trouble of putting the 'good' ingredients in for 'off the shelf' products. We carry them on our site and in our office and can assist consumers who want the very best," says Schlessinger.
