Judi's Place, in partnership with the Pike County Artisans Center, will host an open house and silent auction March 6 from 4-6 p.m. The center is located at 106 Williamson St. All proceeds will go toward the purchase of a larger, better equipped facility.

Visitors to the open house can tour the current facility, specially designed to provide a child-friendly atmosphere where child victims of sexual and physical abuse can receive a variety of services. Center Executive Director Laura Kretzer said as effective a resource as Judi's Place is, the center has outgrown its current space.

"A larger facility is an investment in our community to bring safety, healing and justice to our most vulnerable citizens - our children," Kretzer said. "The silent auction and open house are a way to show area residents that we play a vital role for children and families in the region. With a larger center, we will be able to expand treatment and prevention services and community collaboration."

The open house also will feature a tree of life sculpture with leaves engraved with the names of people and organizations that contribute $300 or more toward the larger facility.

Since July 2006, Judi's Place has advocated on behalf of more than 120 child victims of sexual or severe physical abuse. Services provided to young victims range from specialized interviewing to medical examinations. The center is funded in part by the state Cabinet for Health and Family Services (CHFS).

"Child advocacy centers offer support and comfort to child victims of sexual abuse," said Sherri Stover, program administrator for the CHFS Division of Child Abuse and Domestic Violence Services. "Children in the Big Sandy region who suffer such traumatic experiences need and deserve the kind of help and resources provided by Judi's Place."

Child advocacy centers provide services at no cost to victims or their families.
