Antioxidant Treatment May Help Male infertility
Antioxidant treatment may play a role in assisting couples with male infertility problems, a new review, published today by the Cochrane Library, suggests.
It was known that antioxidants are helpful in promoting longevity in life, preventing cancer and heart disease, but now the increased antioxidant intake may also help men boost their fertility.
There are many factors that cause infertility in both men and women. One cause of male infertility can be the oxidative stress to a male’s sperm. Anywhere from 30% to 80% of infertility cases can be due to this factor. The study was conducted to see if antioxidant supplementation would boost the quality of sperm, thus helping couples conceive at a higher rate.
The study followed 2876 couples with 34 live trials performed. It included a placebo group, a no treatment group, and an antioxidant supplementation group for the men. There was a statistically significant increase in both pregnancies and live births in the antioxidant group.
In a world filled with pharmaceuticals that can create possible side effects, this particular study found there to be no side effects associated with the increased supplementation. It is always best to check with the trusted health care provider before beginning any new supplementation program. Certain supplements need to be taken in proper dosage and cross-checked with any other medication that the individual is taking.
Antioxidants can be found in food or through supplementation. They can help prevent oxidative stresses in our environment and from the lifestyle choices that we make each day. It is recommended to get antioxidants from food as much as possible by eating a variety of fruits and vegetables from all of the color groups.
Antioxidants from supplementation can include things like: vitmain E, vitamin C, vitamin A, selenium, lycopene, lignan, and others. This particular study suggested that there needed to be further comparisons of which antioxidants were the most effective. This news may prove to be promising for those couples having difficulty conceiving.
