Resistant Starch Foods Promote Weight Loss According to Study
Step aside Mr. Atkins, a resistant starch foods diet is the new way to successful weight loss.
According to research done at the University of Colorado's Center for Human Nutrition, resistant starch foods are a natural way to weight loss. These foods make you feel fuller with less calories, provide bountiful energy, lower cholesterol, and promote calorie burn. Both the Food and Agricultural Organization and the World Health Organization are supporting the claims made by the researchers.
Resistant starch foods are unique because they can travel all the way through your small intestine without being digested at all. Regular starches, such as bread and pasta are easily digested in the small intestine, converted to sugars and are used for short-term energy. Excess sugars that are not used are stored as fat and lead to weight gain. Resistant starch foods, however, avoid this process all together. In fact, they act more like a fiber than a carb. When the resistant starch reaches the large intestine it is broken down by the bacteria to be used as fuel, thus providing a small amount of healthy calories while keeping the body feeling full.
Used as a natural weight loss tool, the research reports that the resistant starch food increases muscle mass, reduces fat cells and cuts cravings for unhealthy foods. Furthermore, they share the same healthy benefits as fiber, which include promotion of healthy elimination, protects against digestive disease and decreases the risk for diabetes.
Foods high in resistant starches include beans, whole grains (barley, brown rice, bulgar wheat), bananas, corn, potatoes, yams, oatmeal, and lentils. In order to use these foods for weight loss you must make a high percentage of your carbohydrate intake from this food group.
The editors for Health magazine have published a book titled, “The Carb Lovers Diet: Eat What You Love, Get Slim for Life”, which focuses on using resistant starch foods for weight loss.
