Mosquito Numbers Increasing: Take Steps To Prevent West Nile

Temperatures are increasing and so are mosquito numbers, prompting health officials to remind South Dakotans of the importance of taking precautions to protect themselves from West Nile virus (WNV).
"Local control programs and our own targeted mosquito surveillance are finding increasing numbers of mosquitoes in the traps," said Dr. Lon Kightlinger, State Epidemiologist for the Department of Health. "Plus, we've had four human cases of West Nile so far this season. As people head outdoors for 4th of July celebrations, they really need to protect themselves by using mosquito repellent."
