Sticking To That New Year's Resolution Is Easy

At age 25, Kelly's weight had already reached 320 pounds, creating multiple health risks including high blood pressure and severe arthritis. She had been heavy since childhood, but it wasn't until she had to undergo back surgery, because of her weight, that she knew it was time to make a drastic change in her life.

Kelly had tried many weight loss programs and diets in the past, with little success, but decided to try the OPTIFAST program after seeing the dramatic results of another patient on the same program at her doctor's office. With the comprehensive OPTIFAST program, and her doctor's support, Kelly is on her way to a healthy 2008. Today, she has lost 145 pounds and has lowered her blood pressure and cholesterol -- Kelly is now living a healthy, active life and is confident in her future.

"While the new year always brings out the best intentions to get healthy and lose weight, most people don't stick to their healthier habits for very long," says Dr. Leonard Mastbaum, Senior Medical Director for
Novartis Nutrition. "In fact, 75 percent of the adult population makes weight loss their number one resolution in January, but very few stick to it for more than a month or two. The patients I've put on the OPTIFAST program, however, have seen great success and long-term results."

"Basic caloric reduction and balanced nutrition are still the most effective ways to lose weight," added Mastbaum. "Learning how to implement these techniques is where the OPTIFAST program excels and other programs often fail."

"Not only did the weight melt off me, but I was interacting with other patients and health professionals on a weekly basis-that was, and continues to be, extremely motivating to me," says Kelly. "The support system is invaluable and allowed me to continue learning, even after I lost the weight. The long-term management program teaches proper nutrition, label reading and grocery shopping, which no other program I'd tried before provided. The OPTIFAST program made me view food in a different way and motivated me to make my health a top priority."

The OPTIFAST experience is one of the most comprehensive weight loss options available. The program combines support and counseling, lifestyle education, and medical monitoring with meal replacements to help people lose weight and reduce weight-related health risks. A team of dedicated medical professionals provide support -- in many cases including a physician, dietitian, exercise physiologist and psychologist.

The OPTIFAST program utilizes a stimuli-narrowing dietary intervention in combination with behavioral therapy techniques. Stimuli-narrowing limits the variety and quantity of available foods and flavors to decrease appetite. Together, the main components of the OPTIFAST program -- stimuli narrowing and behavioral therapy -- have helped more than 1,000,000 people lose weight during the 34 years the OPTIFAST program has been available. More importantly, over 50 percent of those who complete the OPTIFAST program keep enough weight off to improve their health long term.
