Checklist: Choosing a Doctor

Doctors vary in their training and expertise. This checklist includes things you can do when choosing a doctor:

  • Make a list of the qualities you want in a doctor. This may include the doctor's training, experience, credentials, location, availability of appointments, hospital affiliation, and languages spoken. You can often get this information from your health insurance plan or the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine, at


  • Ask for recommendations. Get opinions about doctors who can meet your needs from people you trust -- family members, friends, other doctors, or your health plan or local hospital.

  • Talk to staff in the doctor's office. Ask whether the doctor is taking
