Wisconsin state health officials urge everyone to follow some basic precautions to prevent themselves from getting sick from contaminated pool, spa, lake or river water.

"Swallowing or having contact with contaminated water poses a health risk and can make you sick," said Dr. Sheri Johnson, State Health Officer. "Children, pregnant women and persons with compromised immune systems are at greatest risk from infection."

Recreational water illnesses can cause a wide variety of symptoms including skin, ear, respiratory, eye, and wound infections. The most commonly reported illness is diarrhea, which can be caused by germs such as cryptosporidium, giardia, shigella, and E. coli.
