The Arkansas Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Health, Radiation Control Section has received notification morning from Materials Testing of Arkansas of the theft of a portable industrial gauge containing radioactive material. This gauge is a TROXLER Model 3440 (S.N. 19914) Soil Density Gauge used in parking lot and roadway construction work throughout the State of Arkansas. The gauge contains a Cesium (Cs-137) radioactive source with an activity of nine (9) millicuries and an Americium (Am-241) radioactive source with an activity of 44 millicuries. This gauge was stolen this morning between 0600 and 0630 from the back of a Materials Testing pickup truck parked at the Wal-Mart Parking Lot on Baseline Road in Little Rock, Arkansas.

If this device is found, local law enforcement authorities and the Division of Health's Radiation Control Section should immediately be notified. The Division of Health may be contacted at 1-800-633-1735. The gauge could be a health risk to persons if handled or carried for an extended period of time.

Little Rock police, local government officials and law enforcement agencies, the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management have also been notified.

Although the gauge poses a potential public health risk, it does not contain sufficient material to be used for any explosive device.
