Payment for medical services must be based on quality rather than quantity, CMS Acting Administrator Kerry Weems said on Monday during a luncheon address to members of the Advanced Medical Technology Association, CQ HealthBeatreports.

According to Weems, aligning payments with the quality of careprovided -- rather than volume -- will require better ways to measurethe success of treatment. The agency is testing a pay-for-performancepilot program intended to give higher reimbursements to hospitals thatadhere to certain performance measures, such as giving aspirin to heartattack patients. Sen. Norm Coleman (R-Minn.), who also spoke at theluncheon, praised the medical technology firms for their "innovation"(Walker, CQ HealthBeat, 10/1).
