CompleWare Corporation, VIDA Diagnostics, University of Iowa plan to collaborate in providing software and services to manage radiological images, such as CT and MRI, for clinical drug trials.

"This is an exciting opportunity that will allow pharmaceutical companies to collect, analyze, manage and report all clinical research data using only one software application," said John Weiler, M.D., CompleWare president and UI professor emeritus of internal medicine. "Companies performing clinical research want all data to be integrated. We call this interoperability. It means that we can now review and study patient diaries, clinical case report forms, spirometry (breathing tests), electrocardiograms, laboratory data and radiological images with one logon to the Internet."

CompleWare offers a full range of products and services to manage clinical research studies, with customers worldwide. VIDA Diagnostics, Inc. provides the ability to automate the review of lung X-ray images using advanced software.

The UI's "Quantitative Imaging of Iowa" (UIQI2) is a new project aimed at offering a multidisciplinary setting to develop imaging protocols. Furthermore, it includes the ability to perform a wide range of imaging studies, offers clinical image review, and helps obtain quantifiable data to assist in analysis of disease severity and treatment response. UIQI2 includes faculty from the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine departments of radiology and internal medicine and the College of Engineering.

"We will work together to provide unique radiological services to the pharmaceutical industry," said Edwin van Beek, M.D., professor of radiology. "We can significantly enhance the information we obtain from imaging studies."

"VIDA software provides automated analyses of lung density and airways that will be very informative in patients with emphysema, asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease," said John Garber, VIDA Diagnostics' chief executive officer. "This three-way collaboration will allow us to commercialize our specialized software and integrate it with CompleWare state-of-the-art applications such as their CompleClinical Suite."

CompleWare Corporation, based in North Liberty, Iowa, focuses on the development and deployment of innovative software applications and services to capture and manage clinical research data such as case report forms, patient reported outcomes, laboratory, pharmacokinetic, quality of life, electrocardiogram, vital sign, spirometry and radiological image data.
