University Of Iowa To Promote Rural Health And Safety
Rural Health And Safety
DuPont has announced a $1.5 million contribution to the University of Iowa College of Public Health to help the University promote and teach the importance of farm safety.
"Agriculture is one of the most dangerous industries. Ensuring that farm families have the training and tools to maintain a safe operation is increasingly important to DuPont as we develop crop-based solutions to meet the growing demand for food, feed, fiber and fuel," said Dean Oestreich, president of Pioneer Hi-Bred, a DuPont business.
Rural residents continue to face challenges in preventing illnesses and injuries on the farm and elsewhere in the rural environment. Through the contribution made by DuPont through Pioneer, the UI will significantly enhance teaching and research in the areas of rural safety and health to help farmers and other rural residents overcome these day-to-day realities.
Since 2000, Pioneer has worked with the UI College of Public Health toward the establishment of an endowed faculty chair in its Department of Occupational and Environmental Health. The gift, which was administered by Pioneer and made through the UI Foundation, marks a continued commitment to higher education and its role in teaching new generations about issues important to the farming industry. The company has also been actively involved with children's farm safety groups including Farm Safety 4 Just Kids and Progressive Ag Farm Safety Day Camps.
"DuPont has a longstanding commitment to the vitality of farm families and rural communities that closely aligns with the mission of the College of Public Health," said James A. Merchant, dean of the college. "This contribution will further strengthen our recognized expertise in rural safety and health and will allow our Department of Occupational and Environmental Health to recruit a world leader in this field."
