Blue Ribbon Panel Members to Address Parental Rights Legislation
Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services Secretary Mark D. Birdwhistell and members of the state's blue ribbon panel on adoption will address media questions after the group's meeting Thursday.
The media availability is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 8, in room 125 of the Capitol Annex. Media are invited to ask questions of group chairman Birdwhistell, Undersecretary Tom Emberton Jr. and legislators.
The group will meet at 8:30 a.m. that day to discuss its legislative proposal to address family and parental rights issues raised by parents and panel members.
Sen. Julie Denton, R-Louisville, also will speak about the legislation, which she is sponsoring, at 10 a.m. in the Capitol rotunda as part of Children's Advocacy Day.
More than 20 groups are sponsoring Children's Advocacy Day, a rally for citizens to address their concerns for children and seek legislative support.
The 12-member blue ribbon panel on adoption has met regularly since August to review the process and current practices that lead to the termination of parental rights and adoption of children in the state's child welfare system and to identify opportunities for improvement.
