The El Dorado County Health Services Department, Public Health Division will hold its annual community flu shot clinics from September through December this year. At this time, only vaccine to protect against seasonal flu will be available at the clinics. Health officials expect to receive H1N1 vaccine later this fall, which will initially be offered to high risk individuals.

"Most everyone can benefit from getting the vaccine to protect them against seasonal flu," said El Dorado County Immunization Coordinator, Cathy Dunbar. "People who are especially encouraged to get the vaccine include individuals age 50 and older, people with chronic health conditions and residents of nursing homes, pregnant women and parents of children who are under six months of age, children 6 months through 18 years of age, and health care workers and caregivers of high risk individuals.

"We are encouraging everyone who wants to avoid getting the flu to come out and get the vaccine," said Dunbar. People who are severely allergic to eggs or egg products, and infants younger than six months of age should not get the vaccine. "If you are unsure about whether or not you should receive the flu vaccine, speak with your doctor," added Dunbar.

The vaccine will be offered free of charge to children who are six months through 18 years of age. The Health Services Department will bill Medicare Part B for people age 65 and older. There is a donation requested of $15 per vaccination for people 19 through 64 years of age. Parents are advised to bring their child's immunization record so the flu vaccine can be recorded. Seniors should bring their Medicare card.
