Eat Smart, Feel Great
A record number of restaurants and cafeterias will be honoured at the 9th Eat Smart! Awards of Excellence ceremony on Monday, January 26 at the County of Lambton Community Health Services Department.
The ceremony, which begins at 2 p.m., will recognize 33 Lambton establishments for their efforts to provide customers with healthier dining choices.
"When eating out was the occasional treat, it didn't matter what choices were made," says Connie Mallette, Registered Dietitian at the Community Health Services Department. "Today, eating out has become a regular part of people's lifestyles. The average Canadian family dines out 5.75 times each week (October 2004) making healthy food choices essential to good health."
Mallette says consumers are making changes to improve their eating habits and that includes looking for healthier options to eat, both at home and away from home. "Eat Smart restaurants and cafeterias provide healthier choices in the way of more whole grains, an increased number of choices of vegetables and fruit, more meat and alternatives prepared and served in a healthier way and healthier dessert."
The Eat Smart! Program is offered by the Community Health Services Department, Heart & Stroke Foundation of Ontario and Canadian Cancer Society, Ontario Division.
