More Albertans Receive Health Coverage

The number of Albertans with coverage under the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan increased three per cent in 2007/08, with 84 per cent of the 3.47 million Albertans receiving at least one health service paid for under the plan last year.

These and other statistics are contained in the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan Statistical Supplement 2007/08, produced by Alberta Health and Wellness. The document is produced as a yearly supplement to the ministry’s annual report.

Other statistics for 2007/08 contained in the report include the following:

* The number of physicians in Alberta increased four per cent to 6,058 from 2006/07.

* The 26 Primary Care Networks (up from 19 last year) have seen a 60 per cent increase in participating physicians from 2006/07.

* The average annual fee-for-service payment for family physicians was $225,298, an increase of seven per cent from 2006/07. The average annual fee-for-service payment for physician specialists was $357,101 - up six per cent from the previous year.

* A total of $1.8 billion was paid in fee-for-service to Alberta physicians and allied health practitioners -- up 10 per cent.
