Richmond-area residents are invited to join a walk to recognize children in need Wednesday as part of Child Abuse Prevention Month.

The Madison County Department for Community Based Services (DCBS) office, part of the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services, and partners the Madison County Family Resource Centers and Hope’s Wings Domestic Violence Shelter are sponsoring a walk from the DCBS office to the Madison County Courthouse, on Wednesday, April 1.

The walk begins at 8:45 a.m. – rain or shine -- at the DCBS office at 109 E Irvine St and ends at the courthouse, 101 W. Main St.

Staff and the public will place 240 “pinwheels for prevention” on the courthouse lawn to represent the number of children in the county with child abuse substantiations in 2008. There were 164 child abuse investigations involving those children.

“Each pinwheel will represent a young life that was disrupted by abuse,” said Erin Truett, a DCBS family services supervisor in Madison County. “Our aim with this walk is to recognize these children and make a community pledge to help others like them as we work to prevent child abuse and neglect.”

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month in Kentucky.
