Workplace Wellness Programs Reduce Healthcare Costs
Implementing a health program within the workplace has great benefits to both employees and employers.
Chronic diseases not only affect our health, but also have a significant impact on our productivity as workers. In addition, as health care costs continue to rise, employers are looking for ways to lower expenditures.
Enter the workplace wellness program. Tackling health problems before they become severe can benefit both employer and employee.
A prime example is that of obesity. Especially in jobs were sitting at a desk is common, excess weight is a major health problem. Many chronic diseases are tied to obesity, including hypertension and type 2 diabetes. Management of these conditions contribute significantly to the rising costs of healthcare today.
In one recent study conducted by researchers with the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, annual savings for those participating in a workplace-based weight management program saved over $800 per person per year. Over three years, a weight management program saved well over $3 million!
Employees who participated in the workplace program also relayed that they experienced an improved health-related quality of life – which often translates into improved productivity on the job and less absenteeism.
If your company does not offer a wellness program, talk with your l leaders about implementing such a program – no matter how small. Weight Watchers, for example, will work with your HR department to find a opportunity just perfect for your company size and demographics.
