KIND Fruit and Nut Bars May Help Weight Management
In a study completed by the Yale-Griffin Prevention Research Center, not all snacking leads to weight gain and, in fact, the right kind of snacking can help with providing satiety that can help prevent the overeating that leads to weight control issues. The study suggests that two KIND bars daily as snacks can help with successful weight management.
Dr. David L. Katz, director of Yale’s Prevention Research Center, conducted the trial on 94 overweight adults. Each participant in the intervention group was asked to add two KIND Fruit and Nut bars to their normal diet for eight weeks. At the end of the study, Dr. Katz found that those who snacked successfully maintained their weight, body mass index and weight size despite the addition of about 350 calories to their usual diet.
“We know that high-calorie, low-nutrient snacks can contribute to weight gain and poor health,” said Katz. “Our hypothesis was that snack foods that are highly nutritious and filling could help control appetite, reduce consumption of other foods, and add nutrients to the diet without adding calories. That, apparently, is just what happened.”
The study was partially funded by KIND, LLC, the makers of the fruit and nut bars. The company, launched in 2004, is headquartered in New York.
KIND Fruit and Nut Bars come in a variety of different flavors, including Walnut and Date, Almond and Coconut, Almond & Apricot, Cranberry Almond, Almond Cashew, and Almond Walnut Macadamia. The bars are gluten, wheat, and dairy free, contain no trans fats or, cholesterol, are low in sodium, and are a rich source of fiber.
KIND bars have been voted “Snack of the Year” by Health Magazine, and “Best New Product” at the Natural Products Expo East in 2008. KIND is hand-made in Australia and 5% of profits go to OneVoice, a PeaceWorks foundation.
The bars can be purchased in national chain stores such as Kroger, Trader Joe’s, Safeway, and Whole Foods, as well as health food stores, gourmet shops and natural food boutiques. They can also be purchased online at www.kindsnacks.com.
