Slim Fast Recalls Products in US, Canada

Unilever United States Inc. and Unilever Canada Inc. are conducting a voluntary recall of all Slim-Fast ready-to-drink (RTD) products in a can due to the possibility of contamination with Bacillus cereus.

The 11 fluid ounce cans are sold individually or packaged in four, six, or 12-packs. The recall involves all RTD drinks regardless of flavor, Best-by date, lot code, or UPC number. No other Slim-Fast products are affected by this recall, such as the powdered shakes, meal bars, or snack bars.

According to a company statement, the recall was initiated after they conducted quality testing on the RTD products and discovered a potential for contamination. The company is in the process of identifying and correcting the production issue, and will resume production and shipment when the issue has been addressed and corrected.

Bacillus cereus is a bacterial micro-organism which may cause diarrhea and possibly nausea and/or vomiting, usually within 30 minutes to 15 hours after being consumed. No one has reported illness related to the Slim-Fast products, and the company reports that the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.

Consumers who have purchased Slim-Fast RTD products are urged to discard them immediately and contact the company at 1-800-896-9479 for a full refund. The Consumer Services Center is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 6:00 PM. In Canada, consumers can also call the Canadian Food Inspection Agency at 1-800-442-2342.
