YogaMD iPhone App for Relief of Computer-Related Back Pain
Dr Mary Schatz, author of the best-selling yoga book Back Care Basics and certified Iyengar yoga instructor, has created “Computer Rx– YogaMD” for the iPhone and the iPod Touch. The application is designed to teach users easy and gentle yoga poses and practices that improve posture, breathing and stress levels for those who sit long hours in front of a computer.
Other features of the application include two soothing Audio Relaxations for stress relief, detailed photos with animation, a Computer Relief Diary to track progress and set personal goals, and encouragement and tips from Dr. Schatz. The YogaMD also includes YogAlert ™, a built-in reminder system that users can set to encourage regular practice and breaks during the day.
One half of working Americans admit to having back pain symptoms each year. For many, this is due to fatigue from poor ergonomics while working at a computer for extended periods of time. Yoga has been shown in several studies to be beneficial to back pain.
Researchers from the Boston University School of Medicine found that yoga may be more effective than other standard treatments for reducing chronic low back pain, particularly in minority population. Participants in the study who participated in 12 weekly 75-minute classes reduced their use of pain medication by as much as 80%.
Another study conducted at the West Virginia University found that regular Iyengar yoga practitioners were better at overcoming both back pain and depression over the course of the three years of participation. They also had less functional disability than those who received the standard therapy for lower back pain.
Iyengar Yoga is the one of the most popular forms of yoga in the US because it can be practiced by anyone no matter their physical ability. Iyengar Yoga emphasizes postures and breathing that promote strength, flexibility and balance.
