Cleaning is one of the most dreaded but necessary chores. One cannot escape from it. However, what many people do not realize is that some of the products they use to clean their homes, phones, furniture, bathrooms, and other things with are filled with chemicals that are harmful to one’s health. CleanWell founders Sam, his wife Jen, and his mother Joy, decided to take matters into their own hands and create all-natural cleaning products.

It all started when Sam and Jen’s son, Conor, was diagnosed with a rare disease, Severe Combined Immunodeficiency. According to the NCBI, SCID is “a group of rare, sometimes fatal, congenital disorders characterized by little or no immune response. The defining feature of SCID, commonly known as "bubble boy" disease, is a defect in the specialized white blood cells (B- and T-lymphocytes) that defend us from infection by viruses, bacteria and fungi. Without a functional immune system, SCID patients are susceptible to recurrent infections such as pneumonia, meningitis and chicken pox, and can die before the first year of life.”

This disease made even the smallest things difficult for the new family. Thankfully, their son leads a normal life today. However, at the time, it meant that they had to make their home as clean as possible for their newborn son, since most of his immune system did not function, and any illnesses or infections could be fatal. Unfortunately, most disinfectants, soaps, and other cleaning products contained chemicals that Jen and Sam did not want to use in their home, because they proved to be hazardous for one’s health, and that was the last thing they needed provided their son’s illness. So, they decided to create their own cleaning formula. Sam’s mother, Joy, is an aromacologist- someone who studies of all types of scents, including synthetic ones. The three of them created the formula of natural thyme oil, which would not only kill germs but also was safe enough to use around their son. This formulation is found in all of CleanWell’s products.

The company was founded in 2005 when Sam teamed up with a Stanford-trained physician and expert in natural chemistry. The company has three main principles- “We believe in safely eliminating harmful germs, we believe in the power of nature, and we believe in a Better Way to Clean™️.” The last one- a Better Way to Clean- is the company’s slogan. Today, the company can boast that its products contain absolutely no harsh chemicals and they can kill 99.9% of germs. The products are manufactured within the US and do not contain any animal products or by-products.

They even have certification of being cruelty-free by PETA.

All products are safe to use while pregnant or nursing, and even are safe if a child gets ahold of them. They are also safe to use on sensitive skin, including with skin conditions, however as with any product, the company recommends that if after using the products, irritation occurs, then discontinue use of the product. All CleanWell products are free of triclosan, benzalkonium chloride, and alcohol. According to Mighty Nest, triclosan is “a synthetic chemical with antimicrobial properties which destroy or inhibit the growth of microorganisms such as bacteria or fungi.” However, it was proven to be dangerous and is now banned by the FDA.

Here are all the facts about triclosan from Mighty Nest’s website.

“Triclosan is a known endocrine disruptor and a suspected carcinogen. There is good reason to believe that the over use of products with triclosan has contributed to bacterial resistance in the same way we are cautioned against the use of antibiotics. The persistent nature that is connected to the use of triclosan being washed down our drains daily and affecting water life.

Triclosan is also lipophilic, which means it can bioaccumulate in your fat for long periods of time, and as reported by Scientific American, triclosan is now detectable in human breast milk, blood, and urine samples. Environmental Health Perspectives (EHP) found the chemical in 75% of urine samples tested for a study focused on triclosan. And furthermore, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention detected triclosan in 58% of US waterways.

According to the FDA, "Animal studies have shown that triclosan alters hormone regulation. Other studies in bacteria have raised the possibility that triclosan contributes to making bacteria resistant to antibiotics."

The use of triclosan is linked to the following effects on human health:

  1. Abnormal endocrine system/thyroid hormone signaling.
  2. Weakening of immune system.
  3. Children exposed to antibacterial products at an early age have an increased chance of developing allergies, asthma and eczema.
  4. Uncontrolled cell growth.
  5. Developmental and reproductive toxicity.”

This is why it is important to use products such as the ones made available by CleanWell, which do not contain such harmful chemicals, so that you can not only get done what you need to, but also so that your health does not suffer.

Some examples of products sold by CleanWell are hand sanitizer spray, sanitizing wipes, and sanitizing soap.

With the knowledge we have today of how harmful certain chemicals we used to use in our everyday products are, we can begin to live in a safer and healthier world.
