(NC)-Studies show that eating milk products provides long-lasting benefits for your bones, while the benefits of taking calcium supplements disappear when supplementation is stopped.

The reason may be that milk products provide the complete balanced nutrition bones need, as opposed to the supplements which concentrate single nutrients. Milk products provide phosphorus, magnesium, vitamin A, vitamin D (in milk) and protein, in addition to calcium, all of which are essential for building and maintaining good bones.

Why is calcium so important?

Apart from giving strength to your bones, calcium is necessary for many body functions. Practically every cell in your body, including those in your heart, nerves and muscles, relies on calcium to function properly.

In order for your body to function properly, the level of calcium in the blood must stay relatively constant. For this to happen, you need to consume enough calcium throughout the day - otherwise, your blood will "steal" calcium from your bones to maintain the level it requires.
