It may seem counterintuitive, but adding fats to salads can actually make them healthier.

However, a study indicates that optimal nutrient absorption is achieved by adding naturally fatty foods such as avocados to salads or avoiding the use of fat-free salad dressings.

The findings were published in the Journal of Nutrition.

"This study confirms that it is absolutely essential to incorporate fat in the diet to efficiently absorb carotenoid nutrients such as lycopene and beta carotene," said Dr. Steven J. Schwartz, a researcher at the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center
