Two Reasons to Make Your Own Deodorant at Home
Many people probably don't know that you can make your own deodorant at home and that there are two main reasons to make your own deodorant: it’s cost effective and healthier.
There is no aluminum when you make your own deodorant
Most deodorants contain synthetic scents and aluminum; these can be harmful ingredients, especially if you have sensitive skin. My little brother and I both have sensitive skin and wearing store bought deodorant always made our armpits break out and be sore to the touch, this made wearing t-shirts unbearable. I didn’t really understand why or what was causing us to react this way so I did a little research. It turns out, aluminum can be toxic to your body. Considering that it is a heavy metal, this wasn’t too surprising, but it was still a little surprising.
Some studies have shown that high levels of aluminum in your body can contribute to Alzheimer’s and other neurological diseases. Now, aluminum is prevalent in our environment so there is no reason to freak out, but you should try to limit your exposure to it. One way that you can do that is to use deodorant that doesn’t contain aluminum.
Save some money by making your own deodorant
There are a lot of natural deodorants out there that will get the job done. These can get expensive though and depending on how many people are in your household, those costs will add up. When you make your own deodorant, you can buy the ingredients in bulk and get a good discount.
The ingredients needed to make your own deodorant are: coconut oil, shea butter, arrowroot powder, and baking soda. If you want to add some scents I recommend using essential oils, this is a natural option for scents; it makes the deodorant smell better but is ultimately unnecessary.
- Shea Butter – $5.95 for 16 oz
- Coconut Oil - $3.68 for 14 oz
- Arrowroot Powder – $3.57 for 20 oz
- Baking Soda - $0.82 for 16 oz
This brings the total cost to $14.02. This is about what it would cost for two to three clinical strength deodorants. With this much product, you can make about seven, four ounce containers. This is nearly double what you could buy at the store, not to mention there would still be some ingredients left over for you to use for cleaning, skin care, and/or hair care. So, not only is this option healthier it is cheaper as well.
These are two reasons to make your own deodorant
Natural deodorant is healthier for you because you can avoid artificial scents and the heavy metal, neurotoxin aluminum. This can help cut back on your exposure to aluminum and help you avoid any negative side effects this may cause. This is the healthier option and the cheaper option. For the same price of two or three store bought deodorants you can make seven natural deodorants.
