That amazing new baby smell: one of the most wonderful scents in the world

Baby kiss

Whether they're aware of it or not, one of the first things people do when they're holding a very young baby is take a deep whiff.

How incredible is a newborn baby. That first time they look at you and your heart melts. And that amazing new baby smell.

New baby smell is real. It is intoxicating - even delicious (ever hear someone holding a newborn say, “I could just eat you up”?).

In a study published in Frontiers of Psychology, scientists analyzed activity in the brains of 30 women who were exposed to the smell of newborn babies taken from pajamas (so that there was no visual stimulus). Half of the women had just given birth to their first child, while the other half were childless. They found that regardless of maternal status, the smell of newborns triggered dopamine release in the reward pathways of the brain — the same "pleasure pathways" affected by cocaine, food, and other stimuli that evoke reward response.

The Bible talks a lot about smells. For example, in 2 Corinthians 2:15 it says "for we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing."

Think of us like newborn babies and when we are saved God picks us up and inhales that beautiful new baby scent. A pleasing aroma.

Our sense of smell is one of the most powerful senses we possess, and that's why God made a new baby smell so good.

The smell is gone after six weeks. Researchers think the scent could be caused by leftover amniotic fluid, or vernix—the white, cheesy-looking substance covering babies at birth.

Whatever the cause, it appears to be all part of God's plan to make us instantly fall in love with these small and totally dependent creatures.

A human baby is extremely vulnerable, and if we didn’t to find them irresistible, it's possible we wouldn’t feel a pull to take care of them and they would die.

Baby Kiss

Babies are living proof of preciousness of life and the fragility of the young. They are beautiful gifts from God.

"For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb… my frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place." (Psalm 139: 13, 15).

The slightly sweet smell of a newborn is one of the most wonderful scents in the world.
