Window film can greatly reduce your exposure to deadly UV rays
One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of a lifetime according to skincare.org. Here are some simple tips such as window film, on how you can protect yourself and your children.
What is skin cancer? Skin cancer is the abnormal growth of skin cells. Skin cancer is caused by the sun's most damaging ultraviolet A and ultraviolet B rays.
What exactly are UVA and UVB rays
Ultraviolet A (UVA) rays go deep into the skin, causing the skin to age prematurely which causes your skin to wrinkle. Most importantly, they can also weaken your immune system. A weakened immune system is a gateway for the cancer cells to start to develop.
Ultraviolet B (UVB) rays are unlike UVA rays that go deep into your skin. UVB rays usually just go through a few layers of your skin. These are still harmful and cause your skin to sunburn. Both UVA and UVB rays work together.
The 3 Most Common Types of Skin Cancer
- Basal Cell Cancer- A type of skin cancer that begins in the basal cells.
- Melanoma- The most serious and well known type of cancer.
- Squamous Cell Skin Cancer- A form of skin cancer that develops in the cells of the outer layer of the skin.
Some tips on how to reduce your exposure to harmful UVA and UVB rays
Protect yourself and your children with clothing
If you are outside for prolong amounts of time, cover up. Clothes will help protect your skin from the UVA and UVB rays. Even on cloudy days you are still being exposed to the harmful rays.
Find some shade
If you are outside during the hours of 10-4, find some shade. During this time the UV light is at its strongest. Shade will help protect you.
Tint your windows
Most people probably do not think about UV rays coming through your windows, but they certainly do. A way to protect this is by installing a window film to block out those harmful rays, according to The International Window Film Association (www.iwfa.com). Darrell Smith, Executive Director of the IWFA says, "Professionally installed window film offers high-tech and cost-effective ways to help protect both skin and eyes."
