Garlic, ginger and Lime
In this study, scientists prepared ethanolic and aqueous extracts of garlic, ginger and lime. The aim was to compare the antifungal activities of each one individually against three types of fungus. The first fungus was aspergillus flavus, which is the second leading cause of invasive aspergillosis or lung infection and it is the most common cause of superficial infection. The second fungus was aspergillus niger, one of the most frequently encountered fungal infection in ear, nose and throat clinics. The last fungus tested against garlic, giner and lime was a fungus called cladosporium herbarun, which has been known to cause several different types of infections, including skin, eye, sinus, and brain infections. Cladosporium has also been associated with allergies and asthma.
Scientists observed after 7 days of incubation in the ethanolic extract, all funguses succumbed more effectively to ginger followed by garlic and then lime. In the aqueous extract, Lime exhibited the highest antifungal effect on all test fungi, followed by garlic on Aspergillus species, on C. herbarum whilst ginger was ineffective on Aspergillus species but highly fungicidal on C. herbarum. Scietists concluded that water base extraction technique was the most effective in inducing antifungal properties of lime whiles ethanol base extraction technique was the best for ginger. Garlic on the other hand exhibited a good antimicrobial (antifungal) property in both ethanol and water extraction media.
Onion is another food that will help you treat fungal infections naturally. A study comparing the fungal activities between onion, garlic and ginger demonstrated that onion can indeed be used as a potent anti fungal.
