Scientists found that Sage, scientifically know as salvia, the largest genus of plants, is effective in improving oral and dental health because of its antibacterial and anti – inflammatory properties. Here are some studies.

In an animal model study, induced periodontitis in rats, was treated with the ethanolic extract of Salvia sclarea L ( a type of salvia species). It was found that the treatment with S. sclarea extract, compared to the untreated group of the rats, significantly diminished the process of inflammation. This was concluded to be a result to the potent antioxidant activities found in the plant. Having in mind that overproduction of reactive oxygen species is connected to periodontitis, the strong antioxidant capacity may be contributable to anti-inflammatory properties of the extract.

Researchers observed that the sage mouthwash effectively reduced the number of streptococcus mutans in dental plaque.

In another study, 30 patients with gingivitis and 30 patients with mouth ulcers used sage mouthwash to treat gengivitis and mouth ulcers. Analysis of gingival scores by gingival index of loe and silness of sage mouthwash, individually showed a statistically highly significant improvement and healing of gingivitis (decreased mean value) from the first day to the sixth day. Mouth ulcers signs and symptoms of the study group in comparison with control group showed a statistically significant improvement in daily observations. It was concluded therefore thatsSage extract is effective as an anti-inflammatory product against gingival inflammation and mouth ulcers.
