Coconut oil is an edible oil extracted from the kernel or meat of mature coconuts harvested from the coconut palm. It is widely used topically and internally for many conditions because of its antiviral and antibacterial activities. But, consuming coconut oil will not only help you with fighting diseases, because scientists found that coconut oil can also help you lose weight. Here is what researchers observed!
In this open-label pilot study, subjects were given virgin coconut oil (VCO) for four weeks in order to investigate its efficacy in weight reduction, and its safety of use in 20 obese but healthy Malay volunteers. Found that waist circumference (WC) was significantly reduced with a mean reduction from initial measurement. Interestingly, WC reduction was only seen in males. There was no change in the lipid profile. There was a small reduction in creatinine and alanine transferase levels.
Coconut oil will help you loose weight without any side effects, as observed in this study, at amounts of 30 mL per day taken in three divided doses, half an hour before each meal. This amount was calculated based on the amount of lauric acid found in human mother's milk, the suggested daily intake of 24 g of lauric acid in an average adult is equivalent to 30 mL per day of VCO.
But, the mechanisms in which coconut oil will help you lose weight has only been observed more recently, in a study published at the European Journal of Nutrition. In this study, fifteen adult women with excess body fat consumed two isocaloric mixed breakfasts containing 25 mL of Virgin Coconut Oil or control (extra-virgin olive oil-C). Scientists found that VCO suppressed hunger, promoted satiety and total fullness.
