What to eat while craving sweets has never been an American problem since Americans consume far too much sugar. This over-consumption of sugar causes major health conditions such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and obesity, according to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Americans Consume The Wrong Sugar, That Is.

According to the American Heart Association, In deciding what to eat while craving sweets, Americans go for the junk, and consume high amounts of processed foods that contain added sugars --sugars and syrups. These are sugars that do not occur in nature, such as those found in fruit (fructose). Added sugars (or sweeteners) usually include artificial sweeteners, natural sugars (such as white sugar, brown sugar and honey) and the more deadly chemically manufactured sugars (such as high fructose corn syrup). Other names for added, or hidden sugars in processed foods include agave syrup, brown sugar, corn sweetener, corn syrup, sugar molecules ending in “ose” (dextrose, fructose, glucose, lactose, maltose, sucrose), high-fructose corn syrup, fruit juice concentrate, honey, invert sugar, malt sugar, molasses, raw sugar, sugar, syrup.

While statistics show consumption of fruits and vegetables has risen in the United States, Americans are still eating way too much of the wrong sugar –refined sugar.

That being said, some of us are better than others as not indulging our sweet tooth with junk while for others, it can be more challenging. So the question is: Does having a so-called sweet tooth mean it’s harder to avoid sugar - or could there be a physiological explanation for sugar cravings?

Three Studies Were Performed On Mice, Primates And Humans

A study published in the journal Cell Metabolism done on rodents found that a hormone secreted by the liver, which they called FGF21, "suppress[es] the intake of sweets."

Another study also published in Cell Metabolism on primates suggests that the very same hormone (FGF21) can reduce the appetite for sweets.

Yet another study was published in Cell Metabolism involving the same hormone (FGF21), but this time on humans seeking to explain the origins of sugar cravings.

Results Showed The Human Liver Produces The Sugar Craving Hormone, FGF21

The study concluded that the circulating sugar craving hormone (FGF21) may regulate sweets intake in adult humans, consistent with its effects in mice and non-human primates.

However, the study’s findings also suggest that the human liver might produce hormones that regulate food intake by acting on the reward system, opening a new front in the search for therapeutics to reduce appetite and modify specific food intake.
