A burger is a high-fat sandwich, that consists of one or more cooked patties (usually beef) placed inside a roll or bun. The patty may be pan fried, barbecued, or flame broiled. A vegan burger is a low-fat sandwich, that consists of one or more cooked patties (usually plant-based) placed inside a roll or bun. The patty may be grilled or baked.

While there are fewer things more beloved than the American burger, they don’t have to only be for meat eaters. This vegan burger recipe is by far the easiest to prepare. Made with only three vegan ingredients, this vegan burger is heart-healthy, nourishing and satiating.

Ingredients of a Vegan Burger:

Two large, or four small sweet potatoes
¼ cup cooked (or canned) black beans (rinsed)
½ cup brown rice

Method of Preparation

Bake the sweet potatoes on 400 degrees until they are soft. Allow to cool, then peel and mash the sweet potatoes with a fork in a bowl.

Add the black beans and brown rice to the mashed sweet potato. If you prefer spice, add salt, pepper, cumin, and 1 tsp of finely chopped jalapeno or serrano peppers. Combine ingredients then mold the mixture into patties.

In a 400 degree oven, broil the patties for 5 -7 minutes or until golden on top. Remove from the oven and serve on a bun if desired. The burgers may also be prepared stovetop on a grill pan for 3-5 minutes on each side.

Top with red onion, sliced avocado or the topping of your choice.
