Cheese Raises The Risk Of Cardiovascular Disease
If nothing else, cheese is of course a dairy product that is high in fat, which is counter productive to any healthy vegan diet. A recent study from Harvard Chan School and published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition investigated the relationship between dairy fat intake and risk of cardiovascular diseases, such as heart disease and stroke.
Researchers followed more than 43,000 men from the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study, 87,000 women in the Nurses’ Health Study, and 90,000 women in the Nurses’ Healthy Study II to study the relationship between dairy fat and heart disease risk. The detailed information collected over several decades allowed the investigators to adjust for smoking, physical activity, and other factors known to influence the development of heart disease.
Full-fat dairy milk, yogurt, butter, cheeses, and cream were not found to increase heart disease risk (compared to a background diet that typically contains high amounts of refined carbohydrates and sugars). However, it is important to note that these foods were not found to decrease risk either.
When it came to causing cardiovascular disease the big reveal happened with “fat swapping.” When dairy fat was replaced with the same number of calories from other fats, such as vegetable fat or polyunsaturated fat, the risk of cardiovascular disease dropped by 10% and 24%, respectively.
Furthermore, replacing the same number of calories from dairy fat with healthful carbohydrates from whole grains was associated with a 28% lower risk of cardiovascular disease. Replacing dairy fat with other types of animal fat, such as from red meat, predicted a modest 6% higher risk of cardiovascular disease.
Cheese Is Sugar
You’ve given up sugar to go vegan and now you’re working on giving up cheese, but you’re finding it difficult. This is because cheese is sugar. This is what makes cheese so addicting. What is more, cheese is perhaps the worst kind of sugar you could possibly eat, since lactose (the sugar in cheese) binds to fat in the body. Over time this can be the cause of many symptoms, such as fatty liver. A sluggish fatty liver leads to high cholesterol, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease and Type 2 diabetes. Anyway you slice it, cheese is not a friend of the human body.
Nutritional Yeast Is Not The Answer
Once you finally get over your addiction of cheese, try to dissuade yourself from replacing it with Nutritional yeast. As a food enhancer, Nutritional Yeast is MSG, which is a known neurotoxin that is best avoided.
